Small faint twinkling stars could be seen through the thick snowy clouds that night. Clara looked up at them as she stepped out of the moderately cool car into the cold and dark street. Her boot caught on the dirty blackened slush that had been mashed up by the tires, and she pulled her foot up with a great squelching noise, the grey goop dripping off the faded leather sole. She stuck her head out into the bitterly cold wind, her hat flapping and her cheeks and nose battered by the freezing gale as if hot knives cut her flesh.  Straightening up, she fumbled in her bag for the cab fee.
